Officer's Collar Badge 1880

This detail of an officer's dress collar is taken from a photo of Major Knox Leet who won the VC in the Zulu War of 1879. The regimental collar badge was adopted in the 1870s, in metal for other ranks and embroidered for officers. This badge is on a green cloth backing and is in gold embroidery apart from the mural crown which is silver. Next to the badge is his badge of rank, an embroidered silver and coloured crown. The following year, 1881, the badges of rank were transferred to the gold shoulder cords.
