The Storming of Ghazni

This print gives an idea of the position of the Kabul Gate in the fortress of Ghazni, hidden from view at this angle. It would be hard for the storming party to know whether the gate had been destroyed by the explosion until they were very near it. The formidable walls are punctured with firing holes so that the large formations of soldiers would have made easy targets as they approached. The citadel on the right appears as a fortress within a fortress, and it is clear that only very determined and brave men could get so far into the Afghan defence.
