Jellalabad Second Type Medal, Obverse & Reverse

The second type of medal awarded to the Illustrious Garrison of Jellalabad conformed to the design of the other Afghan War medals, at least on the obverse. The head of the young Queen Victoria who had come to the throne in 1837 had VICTORIA VINDEX around the outside. The reverse side had the figure of flying Victory holding a Union flag in one hand and a laurel wreath in the other. She is flying over the fortified town of Jellalabad. The words on the outside are JELLALABAD VII APRIL with the year at the bottom in Latin numerals, MDCCCXLII. The recipient's name was inscribed on the edge and the ribbon was the rainbow type.
