Major-General R L Payne CB DSO


Richard Lloyd Payne was born on 24 May 1854. He first served in South Africa in 1878, in the expedition against the Sekukini, in the Zulu campaign, the engagement at Zungin Nek, action at Kambula and the Battle of Ulundi. He was in the Burma expedition of 1885 to 1887 where he won the DSO and was mentioned in dispatches. In the Northwest Frontier 1897-8 he was in the Mohmand Field Force. In the Boer War he was in action at Belfast and Lydenburg, and mentioned in dispatches.
