Other Rank's Valise Badge c1860

Brass badge worn on the knapsack or valise of men below the rank of warrant officer. A similar but smaller badge was worn on the ammunition pouch. The garter is oval shaped to accommodate the reverse cypher of the sovereign which has long been the emblem of the Grenadier Guards. In this case it is VR for Queen Victoria.
