Officer's Helmet Plate 1878-81

This short lived badge was designed for the new helmet that replaced the shako in 1878. However, the amalgamations of 1881 did away with the regimental numbers and 34 was no longer used on the badge. The badge is gilt with only the battle honour for ARROYO DOS MOLINOS displayed, in silver. The number 34, in gilt, is laid on a red and white enamelled centre. This is the first appearance of the red and white on the regimental badge. It was incorporated into the design because of the disappearance of the red and white tuft on the old shako, which was a distinction in memory of the action at Arroyo dos Molinos.
