Drummer 1865

Orlando Norie's painting of the 42nd has this drummer which differs in some respects from the photo of a similar period. He is in marching order, with valise and folded greatcoat on his back, and covered mess tins strapped to the top of the valise. His red doublet has white tape on the seams but there is no visible pattern on the tape. The shoulder wings should be blue but Norie has painted them as red. He carries a drummer's sword similar to those carried by English drummers but the photo shows a broadsword being carried in dress uniform. The drum is the usual large side drum, not the half cheese type.
