Quartermaster Sergeant John Simpson VC


On 15 April 1858 during the attack on Fort Ruhya, QM-Sgt Simpson volunteered to rescue a wounded officer from an exposed point within 40 yards of the enemy walls. He then went and rescued another man, a private soldier from a similarly exposed position. The rescued officer was Lieutenant Douglas who was mortally wounded. Quartermaster-Sergeant John Simpson was born in Edinburgh on 29 Jan 1826. He was gazetted for the Victoria Cross on 27 May 1859. He died at St Martin's, Perth in Scotland on 27 Oct 1883.
