Quatre Bras

Painting by James Wollen of the French lancers attacking the 42nd Highlanders at Quatre Bras on 16 June 1815. This dramatic picture conveys the perilous situation of the regiment as they fend off the lance thrusts.' A lancer officer charges into the Highlanders on a black horse while a trumpeter lies near his fallen grey in the middle. The 42nd officer has his sword arm raised as the men fire at the horsemen or hold their bayonets at the ready.'
