Sergeant's Glengarry Badge

The regimental cap badge is based on the Order of the Thistle. It was granted to them in 1768, along with the motto NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT although the last word is misspelt on this example as LACESSET, also on some other badges. Reproductions of this badge are worn in modern times on the pipers' shoulder-belts (with the same spelling). This example was in Bosleys auction catalogue December 2010, as a sergeant's glengarry/bonnet badge 1881-1901. But this badge was only worn on the glengarry, not the feather bonnet. And the number 42 indicates that it is pre-1881. The Sphinx below the oval was granted to the 42nd on 6 July 1802, to commemorate their service against Napoleon in EGYPT in 1801.
