Bandsman 1853

The 4th was inspected by Major-General Napier on arrival in Edinburgh on 3rd May 1853. The artist R Ebsworth's notes say that it appeared with a reduced band in plain uniforms to escape censure from the inspecting officer. Albert Hats with red and white ball tufts; plain double-breasted white coatees with plain blue collars, cuffs and shoulder crescents. Blue flaps on the cuffs with white lace and four buttons. White waist-belt and cross-hilted swords. Band sergeant distinguished by gold shoulder crescents, buttons and chevrons (on right sleeve only) and a crimson sash.

Drummers had blue and white wings and lace [on red coats]. Light blue trousers for all. Ebsworth shows the drummers' woollen wings with narrow blue marks all over the white, making rather a bluish-grey effect; seven darts, points up, on the sleeves; bastion loops of white lace with blue dots.
