Officer's Helmet Plate 1878-81

The helmet was introduced in 1878 and had this badge which became obsolete in July 1881 when the regiment became the 1st battalion The Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment. The Gilt 50 is placed on a ground of black velvet, a reminder of the regiment's facings before 1831. The rest of the badge is gilt except for a silver scroll below the crown which is inscribed 'Queen's Own', and a silver Sphinx below the Garter. Courtesy of Bosleys.
