Drummer 1808

From 1796 the coats of the drummers of the 50th were white faced red, decorated with the regimental white lace with red lines. The shoulder wings were red, edged with a woollen fringe. The fur cap, worn since 1768 was still used for dress parades, but on campaign the shako was worn, with a white plume for grenadier companies. Hair continued to be queued or plaited for flank companies until 1808, after that it was cut short. A white leather shoulder belt was normally worn to support a sword on the left hip. The sword was two feet long and straight bladed. Normally, drummers on campaign wore white trousers but here he has buttoned gaiter-overalls for a more formal occasion. The drum is black with a royal crest painted on it.
