Drums and Fife 1670

This illustration is based on descriptions of drummers and Fifers of the 1670 period. The coats of the musicians were in the facing colour as were those of the pike-men. The buff coats were therefore the reverse of those worn by the majority of the regiment who carried muskets. A recruiting party would have fifes and drums playing to attract attention, and literally 'drum up' recruits.
