Drummer 1905


The drummers were trained to play the side drum and bugle, although there is no sign of the green bugle cords on this young man. He is in review order with a similar tunic to the one worn in the 1899 photo, except that the cuffs are now pointed and edged with red and white piping. The original function of drummers or buglers was to accompany the captain of a company to sound out his orders. Two drummers were allocated to each company and as time went on they were grouped together to play as a Corp of Drums alongside the band.
