Officers 1905

This photo was taken at Dover in 1905 and shows the officers of the two regular battalions. It was unusual for them to be in the same place at the same time. The 2nd Buffs had returned to England from the Anglo-Boer War in Oct 1902 and moved into the Citadel, Dover. In December 1904 the 1st Buffs had returned to England from India, via Aden. They took over from the 2nd at the Citadel and the 2nd returned to South Africa in June 1905. The 40 officers sit together in various forms of dress, some in scarlet undress frocks which have buff collars an cuffs, some in blue undress frocks, some in blue frockcoats, some in khaki service dress and others in civilian clothes. The Colonel of the regiment, General Sir Julius Raines, sits in the middle wearing civvies and large mutton-chop whiskers. The two COs sit either side of him; the one in a frockcoat holding his cap may be Colonel Backhouse.
