| William was born in Rome on 15th Jan 1776. He was the great grandson of George II. He inherited the title on the death of his father the first Duke, on 25th Aug 1805. He married his cousin, Princess Mary, 4th daughter of George III, but they had no children. He was Colonel of the 6th Foot from 4th November 1795 to 25th May 1806, and the Scots Guards from 26th May 1806 to his death on 30th November 1834. This portrait shows him in Field-Marshal's uniform, with a badge of the Garter, in 1800. |
