Ram Major and Ram Orderly c1950

This illustration is taken from 'Regiments at a Glance' by Lt Col Frank Wilson. Unfortunately there is no publication date but it must be early 1950s because the rifles featured in the book are all Lee Enfields which were replaced by SLRs in 1954. The caption is: Ram Major, Ram Orderly and Lance-Corporal Derby XVIII, The Sherwood Foresters. So this was the 18th ram to be regimental mascot since 1858. The mascot is usually ranked as Private but this one has been promoted.

The Ram Major is probably the soldier on the left of the picture. They are in full dress except for the forage caps. The drummers tunics are similar to those worn at the beginning of the century. There is no ram major's sash, but they both wear white gauntlets. The mascot's 'jacket' is red with a gold lace edge and a blue and green inner edge. This illustration shows the Indian Mutiny medal replica on the 'jacket'.
