Edward Stevenson Browne VC CB

Edward Browne was born in Cambridge on 23rd Dec 1852 and joined the 24th Regiment in Sept 1871. He served in the Zulu War as a commander of Mounted Infantry. On 29th Mar 1879 at Inhlobana his unit was being driven in by a force of Zulus armed with rifles. One man was shot and fell from his horse so Browne galloped back and rescued him. When another man was hit he repeated the brave action to save him as well. If these men had become prisoners of the tribemen they would have suffered terribly. For these action he was awarded the VC. Browne continued to serve in the South Wales Borderers and commanded the 2nd battalion from 1893 to 1897. He went on to command the regimental district and reached the rank of brigadier-general. He was also made a CB and he died in Switzerland on 16th Jul 1907.
