Captain Angus Buchanan VC MC



On 5th April 1916 at Falauyah Lines in Mesopotamia, during an attack, an officer was lying out in the open severely wounded about 150 yards from cover. Two men went out to his assistance and one of them was immediately hit. Capt Buchanan went out and with the help of the other man, carried the officer to cover under machine-gun fire. He then returned and brought in the other wounded man, again under heavy fire. He survived and was awarded the VC, gazetted on 26th Sep 1916. Angus Buchanan was born in Coleford, Gloucestershire on 11th Aug 1894. He was a territorial officer in the 4th Battalion, and besides winning the VC and the MC he was awarded the Russian Order of St Vladimir (4th Class) with Swords. He died in Gloucester on 1st March 1944, St David's Day.
