Sergeant Ivor Rees VC



Ivor Rees came from Felinfoel near Llanelly where he was born on 18th Oct 1893. He was in the 11th Battalion South Wales Borderers who were positioned at Pilkem in Belgium in 1917. On 31st July many casualties were inflicted on the battalion by an enemy machine-gun housed in a concrete emplacement. Sergeant Rees led his platoon forward in short rushes and worked his way round to the rear of the German gun team. When he was 20 yards away Rees rushed at them and killed two men. He then threw grenades at the concrete blockhouse killing 5 and capturing 30, along with the undamaged gun. He received the VC for his heroism and was later promoted to CSM. He survived the war and served in the Home Guard in World War 2 as a sergeant-major. He died in Llanelly on 12th March 1967.
