Major General Sir David Ochertlony (1758 - 1825)



Born in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of a Scottish gentleman who had settled in America. He joined the Bengal Army in 1777 and saw action during the Second Mysore War (1783) and the Second Marattha War (1803-04). He was appointed Major-General to command the 1st Division during the Nepal War of 1814-15 against the Gurkhas. He was created a baronet and appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath in 1816 in recognition of his services. He died unmarried, in Meerut, 3 months after he resigned from the Company's service.
