William Arthur D'Oyly O'Malley was born in Jan 1853 He was named William O'Mealy but changed it later. He was commissioned into the 108th Foot in Feb 1873 but transferred to the Bengal Staff Corps a few years later. He took part in the Mahsood Wuzuree operations of 1881 and the Jakht-i-Suleiman Expedition in 1883. He was appointed as Captain in the Indian Staff Corps in 1885 and fought in the Zhob Valley Expedition of 1890. Over this period he was mentioned twice in despatches.

The photo shows him in 1894, in command of a squadron, soon after he joined the 1st Punjab Cavalry. He gained more acclaim in the operations in Waziristan in 1894-95 and was given the brevet of Lieut-Col and once again mentioned in despatches. He was back in action at the time of the Punjab Frontier operations of 1897-98 and was appointed Commanding Officer of the regiment c1900. He was created a CB in 1909 and died in April 1925.
