In 1842 a young sepoy named Matadin Dube found himself in the seige of Khelat-i-Ghilzie. He, along with the rest of his regiment survived the months long battle and served another forty years with what was to become the 12th Pioneers. In 1879, this drawing based on a sketch by Lieutenant Pulley of the 3rd Gurkhas, appeared in the Illustrated London News. It shows Matadin Dube, now holding the rank of Subadar-Major receiving the Order of British India. |
