| The burnished gilt rectangular plate is overlaid with silver ornaments. It was worn on the white leather shoulder-belt by officers of the 60th Bengal Native Infantry in dress uniform, which was a scarlet tailed coat that had Saxon green facings and silver buttons, epaulettes and lace.The centre of the plate has a gilt dome with 60 in floreated numerals. The garter surrounding this is inscribed BHURTPORE, their first battle honour, awarded in May 1826. A finely wrought laurel wreath surrounds the garter with a Victorian crown above. The second and final battle honour was granted in 1842 for their service in the First Afghan War and their actions around Kabul before the city was captured. The draped scrolls are inscribed CAUBUL 1842. This belt plate was sold at Noonans auction on 26 Sep 2019 with a hammer price of 3,400 pounds. |
