This photo shows Second Lieutenant Francis Baring, 5th Baron Ashburton in the dark blue undress uniform of the Hampshire Carabiniers. There are no rank badges on his shoulders as second lieutenants did not show their rank from 1880 to 1902. The shape of the blue and white side cap can be seen more clearly from this side. His saddle has wallets at the front and a leather bag for spare horseshoes at the back. He also has a bag of horse food which looks a little out of place in this smart order of dress. This photo was taken by Lafayette on 17 March 1900 and is courtesy of the V&A.
