The officer in this photo isFrancis Baring, 5th Baron Ashburton who joined the Hampshire Carabiniers in 1900. He has three star rank badges on each shoulder to denote, as from 1902, the rank of captain. His uniform consists of a tunic and jodhpur-style breeches worn with a white plumed silver helmet, black knee boots and white leather gauntlets. The buttons are gilt and the waist-belt and pouch-belt are laced with gold that has a central stripe of white silk. The chains and pickers on the pouch-belt are silver. There is gold lace around the white collar and single gold cord Austrian knots on his white cuffs. The tunic is edged with white piping. The back skirts had false pocket flaps on each side with three gilt buttons and edged with gold cord. His sword is slung from gold-laced straps attached to another waist-belt of webbing worn under his tunic. There would be no sabretache as this was abolished in 1902.
