The khaki uniform worn by this man is shown better in the photo of the Bishop’s Waltham Troop. The method of carrying the rifle is unusual. Photos of regular cavalry at this time show the butt of the rifle to be kept in a leather bucket but there is no sign of that here. A strap around his body keeps the barrel close to him and perhaps there is a device to secure it to the saddle. He has no sword which emphasises the Hampshire Carabiniers role as mounted infantry rather than cavalry. The yeomanry were sent to South Africa in 1900 in that capacity.
