The quality of this badge indicates that it was worn by officers on the khaki service dress forage cap in the years up to and during World War One. The carbines include the detail of a bolt on the left hand firearm. This represents the last carbine issued to the cavalry in 1896, the first bolt action carbine, the magazine Lee-Metford. By the time this badge was worn the Hampshire Carabiniers would have been using the Lee Enfield .303 rifle.
