This photo was taken in 1889 when the Hampshire Carabiniers were in training under the supervision of Colonel Crichton, who can be seen as the mounted figure in the middle of the picture, with more silver braid on his sleeve than the others. Officers are identifiable because of a single belt on the left shoulder whereas other ranks have a white haversack strap crossing over with the pouch-belt. They all wear helmets with a spiked top; this was altered to a white plume in 1894.
