The Yeomanry

Officer’s Sabretache c1885

Under Colonel Crichton’s influence the Hampshire Yeomanry became Carabiniers soon after he took over command in 1884. The title Hampshire Carabiniers may well have been taken on in that year although official recognition dates from 1887. The metal badge on this black leather sabretache is mainly gilt but the scroll inscribed CARABINIERS is in silver or white metal as are the outer petals of the rose. There are no photos of officers wearing this sabretache that are known to me which makes me think that this specimen is a proposed item, perhaps introduced at the end of the 19th century (the badge has a Victorian crown), shortly before the sabretache was abolished.
