The Yeomanry

Private c1850

This poor quality copy of a print reproduced in the regimental history titled 'Trooper of the South Notts Yeomanry' is erroneously dated 1845-1860. The shako worn here is he scarlet shako which was introduced in 1847 and replaced by a blue one in 1861. He has a drooping black horsehair plume on the front, and the yellow cap lines can be clearly seen, but seem to be a single cord as opposed to the double gold cord worn on officers' shakos. The trooper is wearing the blue hussar style jacket introduced in 1846 which has yellow cord frogging. The cuff decoration is quite ornate and may be the Austrian knot design, but is unclear. The trousers have a single slim yellow stripe down the side and the sword is straight in the style of heavy dragoons. The pouch-belt is the plain black leather type. The two vedettes behind the trooper carry carbines instead of drawn swords.
