The Yeomanry

Mounted Officer 1899

One of Simkin's series of Military Types, no. 144, published in the Army & Navy Gazette on 2nd Dec 1899. The officer is faced to the right so that we cannot see his sabretache which would be the full dress red ground version. The horsehair throat-plume on the bridle is now red and white to match the busby plume. Up until 1897 the throat-plume was black. The gold stripes on his breeches look uneven in width in this print but are supposed to be equal.

The other ranks in the background have short horsehair plumes on their busbies and the cap-lines are shorter so that they are not looped up to the right shoulder like those of the officer. They do not have barrel-sashes neither does the officer. They wear breeches and boots with double yellow stripes, and the saddle is covered with a black sheep-skin which does not have a red edge like that of the officer.
