The Yeomanry

Gaza 7 Nov 1917

This illustration from The Great War edited by H W Wilson may well be inaccurate and shows British or Empire troops entering Gaza with steel helmets instead of the Wolseley helmets or slouch hats worn in the Middle East. The caption says that 'when General Allenby began his attack on the Turkish Line his initial success compelled the enemy to evacuate Gaza, but much fighting took place between the first British Forces to enter the town and snipers and machine-gunners who were covering the Turkish Retreat'. It is not known what part was played by the Warwick and Worcester Yeomanry in this battle but they went on to Huj, 10 miles to the east the following day.
