The Yeomanry

Officer's Uniform c1845, Cuff Detail

The dress uniform in the 1840s was very similar to that worn at the end of the 19th century. The upper part of this uniform, from a private collection, can be seen in the pouchbelts section of this page. There is little information to tell us whether the rank of the wearer affected the amount of braid. The pattern of silver Russia braid around the basic Austrian knot is similar to the later pattern but more flamboyant. The Austrian knot is formed from larger braid, whereas the knot in the later pattern is formed from round cord. Below the knot is a three quarter inch width of French lace and another line of Russia braid forming a small trefoil.

Other details of the uniform can be seen here, like the gold and red waist-sash with acorn ends to the red cords, and the snake clasp on the red Morocco leather sword belt.
