Squadron Sergeant-Major D V Yorke

Daniel Vincent Yorke was squadron sergeant-major of D Squadron and is seen here with a cup which he won for shooting. It is either the Wantage Cup which he won in 1904 or the Loder Cup which he won in 1907. Between the years 1892 and 1900 he won 55 First prizes for shooting, 29 second prizes, 18 thirds, and 50 others. He also won the King's Gold Medal, and the Salutaris in 1909. He also shot with the revolver, winning competitions at the Yorkshire Rifle Association in 1904, 1907 and 1908.

He was born in Coventry in June 1870 and joined the 4th Hussars in 1889. He was promoted to sergeant 3 years later and married Mary Louise Hoeck in Medway in 1894. They went to India with the regiment in 1896 and served there while Winston Churchill was an officer in the regiment. They returned in 1903 and he shortly afterwards joined the Yorkshire Hussars on the permanent staff. In the photo he wears the dress uniform of the Yorkshire Hussars with the rank of SSM. An embroidered Princess of Wales badge of the regiment is sewn onto the gold stripes and a King's crown is above the stripes.

During World War 1 he gained a commission and was the Quartermaster for the 2/1st Yorkshire Hussars. He reached the rank of captain and in 1919 retired from the army. He and Mary had 4 sons and 3 daughters. He died in Coatham on 18th June 1938.
