Sub Lieutenant, Review Order 1901

The young officer in this photo, named as George Crompton Lees-Milne who joined the regiment on 17 April 1901, is in mounted review order. His uniform is blue with red collar and cuffs and silver lace, cord, braid, olivets and belts. He has no rank badges on his silver shoulder cords as he is a sub lieutenant. This rank had been without a badge since the abolition of the rank of cornet in 1871. But the one star badge was restored c1902. His black fur busby has a fine egret white over red plume, and a short white busby bag on the right side. It is difficult to see if there is silver braid and a button on the bag. His black patent leather sabretache has silver laced slings as does his sword. The badge on the tache is the same as the old shako badge of the Earl of Chester’s Yeomanry. Sabretaches were abolished for the regular cavalry in 1902 but the Cheshire Yeomanry may have continued to wear them in full dress for some years longer.
