Officers, 21st Company

This photo was printed on the cover of J H Cooke’s compilation of eye-witness accounts of the Cheshire Yeomanry in the Boer War. The officers in the photo are named, all serving in the 21st Company. Their ‘uniforms’ indicate that the photo was taken in the latter stages of their part in the war. The caption ironically claims they are in mess dress. Upington is where the 21st Company was based for much of the war. There were only 500 copies of the book published. The full title is,

5,000 miles with the Cheshire Yeomanry in South Africa: a series of articles, compiled from letters and diaries written by officers, non-commissioned officers and men of the 21st and 22nd (Cheshire) Companies of Imperial Yeomanry, relating their experiences during the South African War in the years 1900-1901 : also articles from "The Times," "'The Times' History of the War," and other papers relating to the marches, movements and operations of the two companies compiled by John H. Cooke.
