Helmet Badge 1800

This detail from a print of Sir John Leicester shows the Prince of Wales plume badge on the right side of his light dragoon helmet. Officially this badge was conferred on the Cheshire Yeomanry in 1803 to signify the link to the Earl of Chester, one of the Prince’s subsidiary titles. But this print by Samuel William Reynolds based on the portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds and James Northcote is clearly dated 13 June 1800. The title of the print is sub-titled ‘Col of the Cheshire Provisional Cavalry’.
