Wilbraham Egerton


Wilbraham Egerton was born on 1 Sep 1781, the eldest surviving son of William Tatton who changed his name to his mother’s maiden name in 1780. Wilbraham was educated at Eton and Brasenose, Oxford. He inherited Tatton Hall estate in North Cheshire in 1806 and completed the house his father had started. He served in the Royal Cheshire Militia in 1803, was a lieutenant-colonel in the Macclesfield Militia, then served in the King’s Cheshire Legion, becoming commandant in 1835. He was MP for Cheshire in 1812 until 1831 and High Sheriff before that in 1808. He was married to his cousin Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Christopher Sykes Bt, and they had 7 sons and 3 daughters. The eldest son, William Tatton Egerton became 1st Baron Egerton. Wibraham died in 1856. The portrait is by Sir William Beechy.
