The Musical Ride 1900

The caption to this picture is, The Musical Ride: Taught in three lessons. Presumably the Ridingmaster standing out in front is wondering why they are all dressed differently for this training session. The headdress varies between a pill-box cap and a slouch hat which is either smart like the sergeant nearest to us, or battered like the third man along. Some men have the khaki service dress with red collars and shoulder straps while others wear one of two types of blue serge frock, either with a plain collar that has a regimental badge on each side, or a collar edged in white braid with no badge.
