Major Philip Kirkland Glazebrook DSO


Philip Kirkland Glazebrook was born on 24 Dec 1880, the son of John and Cecilia Glazebrook of Tremlow Hall, Holmes Chapel in Cheshire. He was educated at Eton and went on to New College, Oxford. He was a partner in the family firm of oil merchants, Spurrier & Glazebrook Ltd. From 1912 he was Conservative MP for Manchester South.

His service in the Earl of Chester’s Yeomanry began as a 2nd Lieutenant on 8 May 1901. Thereafter he was lieutenant on 12 Oct 1906, captain 5 Jan 1911 and major on 26 Aug 1914. He served with the Cheshire Yeomanry in WW1, in Egypt and Palestine and was awarded the DSO for his bravery in 1918 when he put himself in danger, leading two companies in a withdrawal from a precarious position near Jerusalem that was under fire from enemy machine-guns. Sadly he was killed in action shortly afterwards, on 7 March 1918.
