Charles Stanhope, 8th Earl of Harrington


Charles Augustus Stanhope was born on 9 Jan 1844. He was the son of the 7th Earl of Harrington, also called Charles Stanhope. His mother was Elizabeth Still de Pearsall. Charles was a well-known polo payer, learning to play in Malta. He took part in many other equestrian sports like tilting and tent-pegging. The photo shows him tent-pegging in the undress uniform of the Cheshire Yeomanry. He was a captain (honorary major) in the regiment on 30 Mar 1872 and gained the rank of major (honorary lieutenant-colonel) on 23 May 1891. He was Lieutenant-Colonel Commandant from 22 April 1899 and elevated to Honorary Colonel on 30 Sep 1905. In 1869 he married Hon Eva Elizabeth Carrington and they lived at Gawsworth Old hall, Cheshire and Elvaston Castle, Derbyshire. There were no children so when he died of blood poisoning at Elvaston on 5 Feb 1917 his title passed to his younger brother Dudley.
