John Twiss joined the King’s Cheshire Yeomanry on 5 April 1825. He served in the Congleton Troop and by 1839 was a sergeant. By 1842 he was Quartermaster. He was a musician and was probably bandmaster of the regiment as there is a mention of him in the history as being the composer of ‘The Grand Review March published and composed expressly for the regiment by Quartermaster Twiss.’ It was played by the regimental band in the officers’ mess and ‘elicited from Prince Albert the warmest approbation’.
