Undress Sabretache With Lace Edge

This odd sabretache is difficult to explain. Undress sabretaches were nearly always of plain black patent leather with a metal badge in the middle. But this example has a lace border which seems devoid of pattern. This could be the French Braid type of lace, and would have been silver before it became hopelessly tarnished. The bubbling effect of the leather backing is due to age and lack of care. Whether this laced version, perhaps dating from 1849, was a regimental pattern or unique to the Honorary Colonel or Commandant is not known. Undress sabretaches with this badge were worn in dress uniform from c1890.
