Sword and Sabretache Slings c1850

The dress waist-belt worn by officers pre-1856 was of red morocco leather covered with silver lace. The waist-belt itself was in four parts, connected by white metal rings that had the slings attached for the sword and sabretache. The two sword slings were the same width as the waist-belt and had spring clips to hold the scabbard. A small hook can be seen on the same ring as the front sword sling; this was to hook up the sword when dismounted. The sabretache slings were narrower and of equal length, looping onto the three D-shaped rings on top of the sabretache. The silver lace on all the belts and slings was of the Broken Bias pattern. The lower photo shows the snake clasp on the waist-belt, with silver lion heads. This belt was no longer worn by officers after 1856 when the Cheshire Yeomanry altered their uniform to the frogged tunic so that the sword belt was worn beneath the the tunic. And the sabretache was discontinued.
