The East Surrey Regiment

Officer, Sergeant and Private, c1908

Harry Payne’s painting shows the back of the private’s tunic and the back of the white leather waist-belt which has brass loops to attach straps for marching order. The sergeant has a crimson tasseled sash of office on his right shoulder and medals for the Boer War. He has an embroidered marksman’s crossed rifles badge above the point of his cuff. His waist-belt supports a 17 inch bayonet on his left hip. His helmet is the rank and file pattern but the peak is more pointed than ranks lower than him. The tunic agrees in every way with the photos of an actual 1912 example. The officer is dressed as in the 1907 group photo apart from the cap which is without the white cover in this painting. The double breasted frock coat has two rows of gilt buttons and medal ribbons for the Boer War. His crimson waist-sash covers the hidden belt that supports his sword on gold laced slings.
