The bi-metal cap badge was worn by all ranks from c1890 on the field service cap. Officers had a smarter silver and gilt version, but this is the type worn by other ranks. The title scroll underneath distinguished the badge from those worn on the collar. The crown is Queen Victoria’s Imperial crown.
