Thomas James Galloway was born in 1806 and commissioned in 1821. He served in Jamaica during the black rebellion of 1831-2, commanding a detachment of the 33rd Regiment. In the Indian Mutiny he commanded the Peshawar Brigade, and went to New Zealand in 1861, commanding troops in the Maori Wars. In 1871 he was appointed Colonel of the 49th Regiment and in 1874 he transferred to be Colonel of the 70th Regiment that in 1881 became the 2nd Battalion of the East Surreys. He died in New Zealand in 1881.
