Graveyard being Converted

This fascinating picture shows the Coxyde Military Cemetery in Belgium in the process of being converted from the temporary wooden crosses to the IWGC headstones. There was great debate on whether crosses should be used instead of the oblong gravestones. However, it was felt that not all soldiers from the Empire were necessarily Christian - many Jews, Muslims and Hindus died fighting for the empire - but also there was the practical element that it would leave more room for information about the deceased and would allow space for regimental badges and the like to be included.
